VeriSign Secured® Seal

The VeriSign Secured Seal is part of your VeriSign® SSL Service. SSL helps you deliver a secure and convenient way for your customers to interact with you over the Internet. When you display the VeriSign Secured Seal, your customers will recognize the most trusted security mark on the Internet and gain the confidence to complete their transactions with you.

Benefits of Posting the VeriSign Secured Seal

  • More recognized than any other trust mark, 79% of U.S. online shoppers are familiar with the VeriSign Secured Seal (VeriSign Secured Seal Research Review, (PDF) TNS 2006).
  • Show visitors that the site is secured using industry leading SSL technology.
  • Lower shopping cart and other transaction abandonment.
  • Associate your brand with the trusted VeriSign brand.
  • Increase visitor-to-sales conversions.

Features of the Secured Seal

  • The design of the VeriSign Secured Seal is recognized as an international sign of trust on the Internet. Over 90,000 domains in 145 countries display the VeriSign Secured Seal.
  • The VeriSign Secured Seal is available in 13 different languages and viewed an average of 150 million times each day.
  • A pop-up window displays full business authentication information when clicked by a visitor.
  • EV Upgrader™, built into the VeriSign Secured Seal, enables all Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP operating systems to see the visual cues associated with an Extended Validation SSL Certificate.

More than 90,000 Web sites in 145 countries display the VeriSign Secured Seal to show that their site is protected by a VeriSign® SSL Certificate. When you see the VeriSign Secured Seal and verify its authenticity, you can feel confident that your information is protected by VeriSign encryption technology.

What the VeriSign Secured Seal Means
The VeriSign Secured Seal means that a connection has been established to a domain secured by a VeriSign SSL Certificate. SSL enables an encrypted communication channel between your Web browser and the Web site server so that you can transfer sensitive information securely. When you send sensitive information, like a credit card number or password, encryption keeps it private. Learn more: Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): How It Works

What the VeriSign Secured Seal Tells You
Every SSL Certificate is created for a particular server in a specific domain. Before submitting personal information (even a log-in and password), you can verify the site’s identity by viewing the VeriSign Secured Seal. The VeriSign Secured Seal shows you the site name and certificate owner information authenticated by VeriSign and stored on our servers. If the information does not match or the certificate has expired, you should use another method to establish trust with the Web site you are visiting.

  • The URL of the pop-up window is https://seal.verisign.com/.
  • The domain name secured is the domain name you expected.
  • The certificate is valid.
  • The company name is the company you expected.

VeriSign Is the Web's Most Trusted Security Provider
VeriSign is the SSL Certificate provider of choice for over 93% of the Fortune 500 and the world’s 40 largest banks. They trust VeriSign because of our encryption technology and rigorous business authentication practices. Many SSL providers simply authenticate a domain. VeriSign always requires full business authentication for every VeriSign® SSL Certificate issued. More than any other trust mark, 79% of U.S. online shoppers recognize the VeriSign Secured Seal (VeriSign Secured Seal Research Review, (PDF) TNS 2006).

What is the VeriSign Secured® Seal?
The VeriSign Secured Seal is the number one sign of trust on the Internet. Recognized worldwide, the VeriSign Secured Seal appears on Web pages secured by VeriSign SSL Certificates as a dynamic, animated graphic. A static version is also available. Site visitors click on the seal to verify your site information in real time. Add the seal to your secure site by following the installation instructions after you purchase a VeriSign SSL Certificate.

Why is it important to display the VeriSign Secured Seal on my Web site?
According to the VeriSign Secured Seal Research Review, 86% of Americans are concerned that they may be a victim of identity theft. 56% of online shoppers have abandoned a shopping cart/basket or failed to complete an online purchase due to security concerns. Displaying the seal on your Web site reassures visitors, leading to increased visitor-to-sales conversions, lower shopping cart abandonment, and a larger average purchase price. As phishing, identity theft, and other online scams increase, the VeriSign Secured Seal is an indispensable tool in your effort to improve your customers’ perception of safety and trust when they do business online.

How much does the VeriSign Secured Seal cost?
The VeriSign Secured Seal is included with your VeriSign SSL Certificate purchase. After you purchase your certificate, simply download and install the seal.

How do I install the VeriSign Secured Seal on my Web site?
After your SSL Certificate has been approved and issued, your Web developer or Web site administrator must go to the VeriSign Web site to download the seal script and add it to the appropriate pages. The person who installs the seal will need to know the common name used to purchase the SSL Certificate and be able to update the HTML of the pages where the seal will be added. The seal consists of a small line of code that links to a VeriSign-generated pop-up window containing information about your VeriSign SSL Certificate.

How soon will the VeriSign Secured Seal display on my site?
Installing the seal takes just a few minutes. Once the pages are published and your SSL Certificate has been authenticated, the seal may take up to 2 hours to display. VeriSign must add your common name to the database. If this is the first time you’ve installed the seal using this common name, please allow up to 24 hours before contacting VeriSign Customer Support.

Do I need to reinstall the seal after renewing my SSL Certificate?
No. You only need to install the VeriSign Secured Seal once. The validity period will be updated on the seal pop-up window automatically.

Why should I install the animated version of the seal?
The VeriSign Secured Seal uses JavaScript and can be served from VeriSign with or without Flash content. The Flash content animates the seal, making it more visible to site visitors and more valuable to you. However, if your Web site does not support Flash content, you can select a non-Flash version of the seal during the installation process.

Where should I display the VeriSign Secured Seal on my Web site?
The majority of shoppers expect to see trust marks displayed where personal information is entered and transactions completed. According to the VeriSign Secured Seal Research Review (PDF), 79% of online shoppers expect to see a trust mark displayed on a Web site’s home page. You can display the seal on any Web page within the domain secured by your VeriSign SSL Certificate. VeriSign recommends that you insert the seal where it will be clearly visible without scrolling on pages where site visitors may look for proof of security and authenticity:

  • Your home page
  • Shopping cart and checkout pages
  • Log-in screens and on secure application pages
  • On pages with security or privacy policy information
  • Next to checkout or submit buttons

Why isn't there a time and date stamp or organization name on the VeriSign Secured Seal?
VeriSign determined that online shoppers prefer a clean, simple seal design with maximum recognition based on extensive market testing of almost one thousand subjects across four continents. The date, time, and SSL customers’ organization names now appear on the seal’s verification page.

Can I customize the VeriSign Secured Seal?
Do not modify the VeriSign Secured Seal in any way. The seal is a widely recognized symbol of your Web site's authenticity and security. Any change violates the terms and conditions of the VeriSign Secured Seal license agreement and diminishes its value to you.

What should I do if I discover a seal that is misused?
If you encounter a VeriSign Secured Seal that is used incorrectly, please report it to VeriSign via the Report Seal Misuse form. Misuse might include:

  • A site that does not employ an appropriate VeriSign service
  • Mismatched information on the seal’s verification page
  • Missing information pop-up when the seal is clicked
  • A modified seal
  • A seal used in phishing or illegal activities

What is the difference between the VeriSign Secured Seal and the VeriSign Secured Partner Program?
The VeriSign Secured Seal is a dynamic, animated graphic you insert on your secured Web pages. The VeriSign Secured Partner Program will display a VeriSign trust mark next to secured sites on the results page of Secured Partner shopping and search Web sites and in certain software applications. By default your seal preferences are set to display to online shoppers who seek out your products and services. Any VeriSign SSL customer can elect not to participate in this program. If you would like to edit your preferences follow these steps:

  1. Login to manage your SSL Certificates.
  2. Search for your SSL Certificate.
  3. Choose "Set Display Preferences". Here you can uncheck "Include my domain in the VeriSign Secured Partner Program".

Description
The VeriSign Secured Seal should display within 2 hours of installation after your SSL Certificate has been validated. Before contacting VeriSign support, check the most common reasons why the VeriSign Secured Seal did not appear on your page.

Your domain has not been verified

The VeriSign Secured Seal will not appear on a domain until your SSL Certificate has been approved and issued. Make sure your SSL Certificate had been authenticated and wait at least 24 hours before contacting VeriSign support.

Your common name has not been added to the database

VeriSign must add your common name to the database the first time the seal is installed. In most cases your seal will be available for display within 2 hours. If this is the first time you've installed the seal using this common name, please allow up to 24 hours before contacting VeriSign Customer Support.

The common names don't match

The common name must match the common name for the certificate exactly. For example, if the certificate's common name is www.verisign.com, enter the complete common name, including www. If the common name is just verisign.com, do not include www. Do not include http:// or https://.

The pages are on a non-production or test server
The pages with the seal must be within the domain identified by the certificate's common name. Loading the pages on a different site (including a test server with a different domain name) will result in the seal not displaying correctly or other error.

The script was corrupted

Emailing or opening the script in a word processing application can insert characters and formatting, corrupting the script. Return to the installation page and generate the script again. Copy the code from the seal installation page and paste it directly into your HTML.

Other coding prevents the seal from displaying

Test the Web page's code to ensure that an image can appear. For example, insert any static GIF image where the seal should display. Open the page to confirm that the image appears.

The seal script is set up on .ASP pages
Because the Secured™ Seal script generator on our website only creates scripts compatible with HTML, a <div> tag will need to be added in order for the Seal to display on .aspx pages.

If the common name is IDN, please use punycode of the IDN as common name
To support IDN in the Site Seal service, it is required to use punycode of the IDN in the seal display script. For example,  host_name=www.xn--husp1je74cujg.com for host name "www.青年奥运.com".

A puny code converter is available here, http://mct.verisign-grs.com/index.shtml
